I have spent more than twenty years helping writers to fashion their thoughts, memories and imaginations onto the page in a way that will build a strong connection with readers. Whether you want to write a memoir, a self-help book, a film or television script, an academic or scholarly work, a nonfiction book, or a work of fiction, the craft of communicating with your readers in a meaningful way is the same. Creating those connections between the writer and reader on the page is my specialty and my joy.
Do you want to write a book, but you would like a guide to help you through the process so that you can work efficiently and create your best work? I work with authors to get to the heart of what they want to communicate, and I help them get their thoughts down onto the written page at a pace that will get their books done and ready to submit to agents and publishers. I’ve worked with award-winning screenplay writers, best-selling authors, authors who have appeared on Oprah, authors who have written for The New Yorker, and psychologist-authors. Every writer is different, and every writer needs coaching tailored specifically to him or her. I have studied writing through classes, workshops and piles of books on writing. But no single course or book works for every writer. Thus, I listen to my writers and coach them with just the gems that I know will work for them as individuals.
If you have written an early draft of a manuscript and would like some feedback and direction on next steps, you may want to choose a developmental edit. For this type of edit, I carefully review your manuscript and send you a detailed memo that points out the strengths of your manuscript as well as identifying areas to work on. I make specific, chapter-by-chapter suggestions for the next draft, which might include shifts in organization, good places to tighten (or expand) the material, and some tips on writing style.
Once you revise the draft, you can choose to have me look at the manuscript again, this time for a style edit. This edit involves a careful review of the book’s writing style and clarity. Within the manuscript itself, I make suggested changes in the writing that I believe will help to increase the book’s momentum, sharpen ideas, and more fully engage the reader. A style edit also includes copyediting, which covers grammar, punctuation and spelling. A completed style edit is essentially “ready to go” for submission to an agent or editor.
If you have notes or ideas for a book, but you don’t have the time or desire to write it, I can write the book for you. I review your notes and interview you on the phone to gather the information and details I need to write the book. Then, I submit a detailed outline to you for your review and approval. Next, I write the chapters and submit them to you one at a time for your consideration. This is collaborative work in that I work with you to make sure that the words on the page are communicating exactly what you want. I make all of the changes you want until the book is finished – it is YOUR book.
